The study of German will expose you to a rich and complex culture that has contributed enormously to the history of our world. United Germany is - together with France - in the center of the European Union, establishing a new identity in a phase of transition after the fall of the wall in 1989. The German language is not only the language of the most populous nation in Europe, but also increasingly the language of commerce in Eastern Europe and Russia. Globalization has brougth the US and the economic super-power Europe closer together. In fact, the US invests more in Germany than in China. Hundreds of German companies do business in the US: SAP, T-Mobile, Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW, Audi, Porsche, and Bosch; and even more US companies do business in Germany. Atlanta has historically been the gateway to the South and increasingly to European companies. German improves your options on the job market. 40% of US scientists recommend learing German. A testimony to the importance of Germany not only in language, literature, and business, are this year’s Nobel Prize winners Gerhard Ertl (Chemistry) and Peter Grunberg (Physics).
At Agnes Scott College, the German program has been thriving for more than half a century. German has an established major, double major and minor program. German has also been a vital part of the Language Across Curriculum due to the interdisciplinary interests of both the German faculty as well as members of other academic departments like History and Music. The program has been a participant in the Global Connections program with an offering on the study of the Holocaust in Europe. The German program at Agnes Scott has a high success rate of sending students on study abroad programs in German speaking countries. Lots of fellowships and internships are available if you want to go to Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Our German majors have been offered Fulbright, DAAD and Rotary scholarships.

Great people speak or have spoken German! We would like to encourage you to study the language of Heidi Klum, Freud, Mozart, Bach, Marlene Dietrich, the Grimm brothers, Martin Luther, Goethe, Kant, Marx, Kafka, Brecht, Hesse, Mann, Heidegger, Grass etc. at Agnes Scott College.
