Which version of the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlán, city of the Aztecs, by Hernán Cortés is true?

This spring, Anthropology 304: Native Peoples of the Americas offers an optional lab section for one (1) hour credit in Spanish or Anthropology (SP/ANT 300), utilizing Spanish texts as well as translations of indigenous texts into Spanish for students with intermediate Spanish and who have completed the language requirement.

Goals: to incorporate voices of Latin Americans in order to enrich our own perspective; to use language skills outside the language classroom, as part of the Language Across the Curriculum program. Students will be guided by worksheets and discussion.

Course Description:

Spanish 300L / Anthropology 304L

(To be taken concurrently with Anthropology 304)

Description of Anthropology 304:
Ethnographic and ethnohistoric study of the Americas from the time of contact with Europeans until the present day. Attention to ethnicity, to the effects of contact and resistance.

Prerequisite: Spanish 201, or permission of instructor.

Credit: One (1) credit.

Instructors: Rees and Cash.

Rationale: The focus of the language component of this course will be on the careful study of texts in Spanish: by native peoples, translated into Spanish, like the Popul Vuh (a sacred Mayan text); by Spanish chroniclers; by present-day Latin American anthropologists; testimonials. The texts were chosen for their historic, contemporary and personal perspective.

All texts will be edited with glossaries and pre- and post-reading activities comparable to the skills of students who have completed Spanish 201.
