For the French Component of Art 202, students will receive credit for one
semester-hour. This means that the expected amount of work is roughly
one-third of that required for a regular 3-hr course. We shall read
and discuss texts dealing with the visual arts in their historical and social
contexts during the Middle Ages. All reading, written work and discussions
will be in French. The reading list and dates of assignments are included
in Professor Sadler's syllabus.
Strategy for this course:
Each week, (a) a basic vocabulary, (b) questions, (c) the text and (d)
a glossary will be distributed in class.
(a) The basic vocabulary will facilitate the introduction to the text itself,
which can be quite elaborate and complex.
(b) The questions are varied and proceed from general to specific topics.
Some can be tackled at once; others can only be dealt with after the text
has been completely read.
(c) You are not expected to (and should not) read the text word for word.
Depending on your level of proficiency, you will grasp the general meaning
or go in deeper levels of meaning as you read.
(d) The glossary includes explanations as well as the translation of words
and terms that would not be found in a standard dictionary. To facilitate
your task, all entries are in the order in which they appear in the text
and not alphabetically.
How will your grade be computed:
1. You are expected to keep a "workbook" in which you jot
down notes and questions as well as items that you want to discuss in class.
This workbook will be collected twice, at the end of 4 and 8 weeks
of classes, and will count for 1/3 of your grade.
2. You will prepare (and deliver) an oral report in English for Art
202, in order to share with those students who are not in French a topic
that is not included in the (English) Art 202 syllabus. You should consult
with Prof. Sadler as to your choice before you do much work on it. This
report will also count for 1/3 of your grade.
3. Class attendance and participation are, of course, crucial. They count
for the last 1/3 of your course grade.
