Description:
POL 342L is the Spanish Language component of POL 342. POL 342L's
readings closely complement the readings for POL 342, the English component
of the course. The difference is that in this section we are going to read
twelve (12) short texts by Latin American authors, published in a number
of different sources (books, journals, magazines, video, etc.), and that
(with one exception) have not been translated into English. Like POL 342,
the readings in POL 342L cover history, theology of liberation, women
and religion, Roman Catholicism in El Salvador and Mexico, and Evangelicals
(Protestants) in Latin America--in this section we will look at the case
of Chile instead of Brazil.
Goals:
1) To give the students the opportunity to "hear" in their own
voices scholars and practitioners of religion from Latin America;
2) To widen the number of sources (i.e. sources that rarely or never get
translated into English) that can be used to understand the relationship
between religion and the state in Latin America;
3) Related to the above, to assess if by reading these authors in their
native language one can capture a "deeper" level of understanding
in the tension that exists between the Church, poverty, and politics in
Latin America;
4) To provide students an opportunity to develop reading skills in Spanish
by analyzing different types of texts;
5) To provide students an opportunity to develop writing skills in Spanish;
6) To provide students an opportunity to develop oral skills in Spanish.
Textbooks:
The readings and the lessons for the course will be provided by the Department
of Spanish and Political Science.
Requirements:
1) Class attendance and active participation;
2) To complete the weekly lessons that accompany each of the readings. Dates
to turn in the completed lessons will be determined after the semesters
begins.
3) Two class presentations:
a) Each student will do a short (5 min.) presentation, in Spanish, to their
fellow students in POL 342L. Dates will be determined after the semester
starts;
b) Students will do a second class presentation, in English, on the material
they have read in Spanish, to their fellow students in POL 342 (the English
component of the course). For this purpose, students will work in two groups.
Dates: October 23 and December 6.
Attendance:
For first year, first semester students, and for those on academic probation
attendance at all academic appointments is required.
Class attendance is a central factor in the learning process, and absences
will adversely affect students' performance in the determination of their
final grade. It is recommended that absences be limited to one (1). After
that allowed absence, the following chart indicates the grade for class
attendance:
0-1 absence: A 4-5 absences: C
2-3 absences: B 5-6 absences: D
7 or more: F
Class Participation:
Active participation is a must in the learning of a foreign language, and
students will be evaluated accordingly.
Grading/Evaluation:
Grading formula:
Attendance 10%
Participation 10%
Presentations 25%
Lessons 45%
